Bissmark connects on penalty kick to account for Pioneers' goal
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. ---
Lenoir-Rhyne University broke a scoreless tie in the 64th minute and went on to defeat Tusculum College 3-1 in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
Caolan Cullen scored the go-ahead goal with 26:50 left for the Bears (6-5-4, 3-3-2 SAC), and Chris Johnson and Tobias Tobrant added insurance goals in the final 22 minutes.Andre Bissmark
scored on a penalty kick with 6:37 left to account for the lone goal for the Pioneers (6-7-2, 3-4-1 SAC), who were outshot 14-8 by the Bears in the match.
After a scoreless first half, the Bears broke through in the 64th minute when Cullen knocked home a corner kick by Chris Johnson for his second goal of the season.
Exactly 5 1/2 minutes later, the Bears caught a break when Pioneer defender Matias Rubio
handled a shot from Johnson on the goal line, resulting in an immediate red card and a penalty kick. Johnson fired home the goal, his fourth of the year, and gave L-R a 2-0 lead with 21:20 remaining.
The Pioneers received a penalty kick of their own with 6:37 left when the Bears were called for a foul in the box. Bissmark stepped up and buried his fourth goal of the season to pull Tusculum within 2-1.
Tusculum was unable to threaten with the tying goal in the closing minutes, and Lenoir-Rhyne tallied the clincher with 34 seconds left when Tobrant took a pass from Nicholas Sibert on a break and scored his eighth of the year.
Despite being outshot 14-8 by the Bears, the Pioneers held a 10-4 edge in corner kicks. Lenoir-Rhyne was called for offsides four times and Tusculum was flagged twice.Andy Goellner
finished with four saves in goal for the Pioneers, while Stefan Dill made six stops for the Bears.
The Pioneers will close out their regular season with two road matches, beginning Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Milligan.
