First-half goal stands up as Wingate edges Pioneers, 1-0

WINGATE, N.C. --- Oscar Perez's first-half goal stood up for Wingate University in a 1-0 victory over Tusculum University in a South Atlantic Conference men's soccer match Saturday night at Pride Park.

The Bulldogs (4-1-1, 2-0-0 SAC) did not allow a shot on goal to the Pioneers (2-5-0, 0-2-0 SAC) in the second half to earn the victory. Tusculum finished with a 15-11 edge in shot attempts in the match, but dropped their fourth straight one-goal contest.

Perez's goal, his second of the season, came at 36:29 as he headed a cross from Federico Andreani past Pioneer keeper Alejandro Quiriti. Pablo Jara made two saves in goal for Wingate to earn his third shutout of the season and second in a row.

Tusculum had early control of the match, taking the first five shots including attempts from Oscar Rubio Jimenez in the 7th minute and from Edgar Cervantes in the 23rd minute that were saved by Jara.

After Perez gave Wingate the lead with 8:31 left in the half, neither team had a shot attempt the remainder of the half as the Bulldogs carried the 1-0 advantage into intermission.

In the second half, the Pioneers tried to build an attack but were denied by the Bulldog defense, which blocked four shot attempts from Tusculum. Wingate had a look in the 71st minute but Quiriti made a save on a shot from Nate Evans, which turned out to be the only shot on goal for either team in the half.

The final shot for either team was sent wide by the Pioneers' Ayuk Tambe with 6:52 left, as the Pioneers were flagged for offsides with just over four minutes and just under one minute remaining.

Tusculum held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks over Wingate, while the Bulldogs were called for 14 fouls to eight by the Pioneers.

The Pioneers will return home to face Catawba on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
