Top-seeded Tusculum upset by Newberry in SAC semifinals

Top-seeded Tusculum College was upset by Newberry College by a 5-1 score in the semifinals of the South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament Saturday afternoon at the McCoy Tennis Complex on the campus of Brevard College.

The fifth-seeded Wolves (20-5) will face third-seeded Queens University of Charlotte for the championship at noon on Sunday, after the Royals defeated second-seeded Wingate 5-1 in the other semifinal match on Saturday.

The Pioneers (19-4) earned their lone point at number-one doubles, where Tim Stierle and Jonas Winkelmann teamed for an 8-4 win over Fernando Espana and Fernando Tous. However, the Wolves had already taken a 2-0 lead with wins at number-two and number-three doubles to carry the lead into singles play.

The Wolves opened the match with Richard Zeh and Logan Adkins beating Eduardo Munoz and David Siegle 8-5 at number-three doubles. At number two, Jordan Monosky and Jacob Svantesson defeated Tusculum's Leon Seiz and Tashique Kader 8-5 to give Newberry a 2-0 lead.

In singles, the Wolves went up 3-1 as Svantesson defeated Kader 6-0, 6-2 at number four. Monosky put Newberry within one point of the match as he beat Winkelmann 6-3, 6-0 at number three. With Tusculum leading in two of the other three matches, Tous finished off the win for Newberry with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at number two against Munoz.

In the unfinished matches, Stierle led Espana by one set at number-one singles, while Toby deKlerk was up a set and had the lead in the second set against Adkins at number six. At number-five singles, Seiz dropped the first set to Angel Pizarro but had the lead in the second set when the match was clinched.
