Tusculum picked 10th in SAC preseason softball poll

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- The Tusculum University softball team has been picked to finish 10th in the annual South Atlantic Conference preseason coaches poll, released Wednesday.

The Pioneers went 24-25 overall and finished 6-14 in the conference last season, but return eight of their nine starters on offense along with two starting pitchers. Head coach Julie Huebner begins her seventh season with 17 of the 20 players to see game action last year back in uniform for the start of the 2019 campaign.

Defending SAC regular-season champion Lenoir-Rhyne was a near-unanimous number-one pick by the conference's 11 head coaches, earning 10 first-place votes and 110 points to take the top spot in the poll. Coker (91 points) was picked second, followed by reigning SAC Championship tournament winner Carson-Newman in third with 87 points.

Wingate, which had the other first-place vote, was selected fourth with 83 points followed by Anderson (75), Queens (69), Newberry (64) and Lincoln Memorial (45) in eighth. Rounding out the survey were Catawba (32 points), Tusculum (30) and Mars Hill (27).

The Pioneers will open their 2019 season on the road Tuesday, Feb. 5 with a doubleheader at Southern Wesleyan.
