ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum sophomore guard Mia Long has been named the Astro Turf South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week for the week ending January 7, the conference office announced Monday.
Long averaged 13.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 7.0 assists while shooting 68.8 percent from the field as the Pioneers earned wins over Mars Hill (98-68) and Lenoir-Rhyne (71-56) on the road last week.
Against Mars Hill, Long finished with 13 points and a career-high 11 assists as the Pioneers set season highs for points and three-pointers (15) against Mars Hill. Long also had six rebounds and five steals while shooting 5-for-8 from the field. In the win over Lenoir-Rhyne, Tusculum's first on the road against the Bears since Jan. 25, 2012, the native of Ann Arbor, Michigan was 6-for-8 from the field and finished with 14 points and five rebounds.
For the season, Long is averaging 12.1 points per game to rank third on the Pioneers, and leads the team with 37 assists (2.8 per game). She also shares the team lead and is tied for second in the SAC in steals per game with 2.5 per game (32 total). Long also leads the conference with 86 free-throw attempts and has scored in double figures in seven of the Pioneers' last eight games.
The Pioneers (10-3, 5-2 SAC) host fourth-ranked Carson-Newman (15-0, 7-0 SAC) Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Pioneer Arena. The first 500 fans to enter the arena will receive a free "Orange Crush" t-shirt, courtesy of Eastman Credit Union, and all fans are urged to wear orange in support of the Pioneers.
