Hall, Tomassoni named Zaxby's Athletes of the Week

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University pitcher Charles Hall and golfer Katie Tomassoni have been named the Zaxby's Athletes of the Week.  Tomassoni earns her second Zaxby's honor this season.

Hall, a senior right-hander from Dumfries, Virginia, broke the NCAA Division II single-game record with 22 strikeouts as he pitched a 9-inning complete game in TU's 10-1 South Atlantic Conference win over Queens Friday.  He (4-0) breaks the D-II national mark previously held by five other pitchers with the most recent coming on April 1, 1999 when Nate Kosoc of Saint Rose fanned 21 batters against NJIT.  Hall's 22-strikeout effort is ranked seventh for all NCAA divisions.

Hall's record night came on 123 pitches as he struck out every Royals batter at least once including eight of the nine Queens' hitters at least two times each.  Hall recorded two strikeouts in every inning and fanned the side four times including the first, second, fifth and sixth innings.  Sixteen were swinging strikeouts while six came looking.  Hall leads the nation with his 88 strikeouts this year and has struck out 10 or more batters in six consecutive starts.

Tomassoni, a senior from Mason, Ohio, won medalist honors at the Buccaneer Spring Classic in Southaven, Mississippi.  She posted back-to-back rounds of 74 to finish with 148 to win by one shot.  It was her second medal this season, winning the Bob Dibble Classic this past September in a playoff.

For Tomassoni, it is her second individual medal of the season and fourth of her career, which are the second most in program history.  She needs one more tournament victory to match the school record five wins tallied by Jillian Corum from 2009-2013.  Tomassoni lowers her stroke average to 75.80 which is on pace to be a new TU single-season record. She also moves her career average to 77.81, which is third-best in program history.

The Tusculum University Athlete of the Week Award is sponsored by Zaxby's, located at 3280 Andrew Johnson Highway in Greeneville.  The Zaxby's Athlete of the Week Award honors one male and one female athlete each week from an in-season sport.
