Tusculum splits pair in opening day of UNCW Dig & Dive Beach Classic

WILMINGTON, N.C. –- The No. 1 tandem pairing of Melissa Mazur and Haley Davis went undefeated as the Tusculum University women's beach volleyball team split its first two matches at the UNC Wilmington Dig & Dive Beach Classic.

Tusculum (4-7) dropped a hard-fought 4-1 decision to Morehead State University.  The Pioneers bounced back with a 5-0 shutout over Carson-Newman University for its second win of the season over the Eagles.

Morehead State won its match-ups from 2-5 doubles as the Eagles defeated Tusculum 4-1 in the second meeting of the season between the two programs.

Tusculum lone point of the match came at the top-flight as Mazur and Davis defeated the MSU duo of Hannah Keating and Margaret Musselman 21-11, 24-22.

TU also had a close battle at the third flight as the Pioneers Marissa Morgan and Lana Vujosevic went the distance against MSU's Georgia Childers and Olivia Montelisciani before falling 21-15, 19-21, 15-13.

Tusculum 5, Carson-Newman 0

The Pioneers blanked their East Tennessee counterparts for second time on the season as TU won 5-0 over Carson-Newman.

Tusculum won in straight sets at the first and second flights as well as the fourth and fifth tandems.  Morgan and Vujosevic played its second three-setter of the day, but came through with the victory as they defeated CN's Morgan Siwiec and Grace Seymour 21-14, 15-21, 15-12.

Mazur and Davis posted its second win of the afternoon with a 21-10, 21-16 decision over Summer Coulter and Abby Struewing.

Skyellar Hall and Gabby Gray won its No. 2 doubles match with Aryana Fazelnia and Kelly Hughes, 21-15, 21-12.  Lydia Collins and Catherine Clingan took a 24-22 opening set win over Lexy Headley and Taryn Nichols and followed with a 21-12 victory in the second set to complete the sweep. 

The No. 5 pairing of Katelyn Weems and Destiny Ramsey completed the sweep with a 21-19, 21-11 victory.

The Pioneers will wrap-up its three-day, six-match road swing with Sunday's matches against host UNCW (10:30 a.m.) and Florida Gulf Coast (12:30 p.m.).
