GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum soccer forward Ignacio Alconchel and volleyball rightside hitter Carli Pigza have been named the Zaxby's Athletes of the Week.
Alconchel, a junior from Palma del Rio, Spain, netted a hat trick in Tusculum's 4-2 road win at Lees-McRae last Tuesday. He scored in the 25th, 60th and 88th minutes to become the first Pioneer to score three goals in a match since Henrique Devens in 2019.
Alconchel's goal at the 59:46 mark would prove to be the match-winner. His third goal came directly off the restart after the Bobcats pulled within 3-2 with 2:30 remaining.
Pigza, a senior from Fort Mill, South Carolina, averaged 3.00 kills per set and posted an impressive .373 hitting percentage in leading the Pioneers to pair of South Atlantic Conference wins last week. In TU's 3-0 sweep over UVA Wise in the league lid-lifter, she accounted for nine kills, two blocks and a .438 attack percentage. She amassed 15 kills, three blocks and hit .343 as the Pioneers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat defending SAC Champion Wingate in a 3-2 thriller on Saturday.
On the season, Pigza is averaging 2.88 kills and 0.63 blocks per set as Tusculum (5-1, 2-0 SAC) is off to its best start to a season in eight years.
The Tusculum University Athlete of the Week Award is sponsored by Zaxby's, located at 3280 Andrew Johnson Highway in Greeneville. The Zaxby's Athlete of the Week Award honors one male and one female athlete each week from an in-season sport.
