Pioneers take pair from Charleston, complete four-game sweep

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University baseball team took advantage of 21 walks and eight hit batsmen as the Pioneers swept the University of Charleston (W.Va.) in Monday's non-conference doubleheader at Eastman Credit Union Field & Pioneer Park.

Pitchers Brice Anders and Payne Ladd combined on a three-hit shutout as Tusculum blanked the Golden Eagles 11-0. In the second game, the Pioneers rallied from a 7-5 deficit and scored five runs in the sixth as TU prevailed 12-8.

The Pioneers (4-2) complete the four-game sweep of Charleston (0-6) and will play its fifth game in three days on Tuesday when they host arch-rival Carson-Newman University for a mid-week, non-conference contest at ECU Field.

Game 1: Tusculum 11, Charleston 0

Landon Dockery went 3-for-4 with three RBI while the Tusculum pitching staff logged its second straight shutout in an 11-0 win in the first game.

Anders (1-1) allowed two hits, one walk and recorded six strikeouts in his 6.0 innings of work. Ladd scattered two walks and a hit over his three innings on the mound to record the save.

Tusculum finished the game with eight hits, 12 walks and were hit by pitch five times.

Along with Dockery's three-hit performance, Evan Goins tallied two hits including a double in the win.

Charleston's Samuel Lemond went 2-for-4 for the Golden Eagles. UC starting pitcher Landon Ingram (0-1) suffered the loss.

Game 2: Tusculum 12, Charleston 8

Kolby Watson belted a two-run double, while Evan Cage followed with a two-run triple to highlight a five-run inning as Tusculum rallied to a 12-8 win over Charleston in the series finale.

TU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, only to see the Golden Eagles score seven unanswered runs to take a 7-5 lead heading to the bottom of the fourth.

In the first frame, Caden Rector got things started with his two-run single to left. Goins later scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 and Jack Gagen closed out the inning with his two-out, two-run single.

UC answered with two runs in the second and scored four times in the third to take a 6-5 lead. Charleston tacked on another run in the fourth to lead 7-5.

Tusculum tied the game at 7-7 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth as Rector drew a bases loaded walk and Keygan Miksa scored on a UC error.

In the top of the sixth, Charleston got the lead-off runner aboard as TU reliever Cooper Emery took over. He ended the threat with a pair of strikeouts, while catcher Adrian Salas threw out the runner trying to steal second.

Tusculum broke through in the bottom of the sixth as Watson doubled to the wall in right to plate Steve Scarfone and Jake Trottier to retake the lead at 9-7. Cage later hit a two-run single to drive in Watson and Justin Millsaps. Nathan Hayworth closed out the frame with his sacrifice fly as Tusculum led 12-7.

John Stansbury led off the seventh with a home run down the left field line. But Emery (1-0) worked around a single and walk as he posted his first win of the year, a day after getting a save in Sunday's series opener.

Tusculum finished the game with six hits, nine walks and three hit batsmen.
