EMORY, Va. --- Tusculum's Landon Dockery and Jake Smith each recorded six hits on the day as the Pioneers swept a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader at Emory & Henry Friday afternoon at Porterfield-DeVault Field.
Tusculum racked up 34 hits on the day as the Pioneers won the opener 16-4 in seven innings, and scored three runs in their final two at-bats to break a 4-4 tie to complete the sweep with a 7-6 victory in the night cap.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a noon contest on Saturday.
Game 1: Tusculum 16, Emory & Henry 4 (7 innings)
Tusculum jumped out to a 12-0 lead as all nine starters recorded at least a hit as the Pioneers won 16-4 in seven innings.
Kolby Watson went 3-for-4 with five RBI, while Dockery was 3-for-3 with two RBI including a home run. Caden Rector also had three hits, while Evan Goins, Alejandro Ponte, Mason Johnson, Jack Gagen and Jake Smith had two hits apiece.
The Wasps were held to just three hits, all home runs in consecutive at-bats in the fourth inning to account for E&H's offense in the opener.
TU plated two runs in the top of first, five more in the second, one in the third and four more in the fourth to take a 12-0 lead. Dockery belted a two-run homer in the second and Watson followed with a two-out, three-run double in the second to go up 7-0. Watson and Gagen added RBI singles in the fourth to go along with a two-run single off the bat of Goins.
In the bottom of the fourth TU starting pitcher Aidan Sproles gave up a two-out walk to Kyle Fields and J.D. James followed with a two-run home to right to put the Wasps on the scoreboard. Reliver Owen Canter took over for Sproles as he gave up solo homers by Drew Park and Ky Gregoire to make it a 12-4 contest.
But from there Canter (1-3) shut Emory & Henry down limiting them to a walk and a hit batter over the final three innings to record his first victory in the TU uniform. Canter went 3.1 innings, allowed two runs on two hits, one walk and four strikeouts.
Tusculum scored three times in the fifth and got a RBI double from Mason Johnson in the sixth to wrap up the scoring.
Game 2: Tusculum 7, Emory & Henry 6
Tusculum broke a 4-4 tie scoring two runs in the sixth and Jake Absher belted a solo homer for a valuable insurance in the seventh as the Pioneers held on for a 7-6 win.
Jake Smith went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Dockery posted another three-hit performance and Goins, Absher and Ryan Ortega each had two hits in the victory.
Tusculum broke through with three runs in the first inning as Dockery led off a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Goins' RBI single. Ortega singled and Alejandro Ponte drew a walk to load the bases. Goins would score on a wild pitch and after Rector was hit by a pitch, Johnson drew a bases loaded walk to make it a 3-0 contest.
E&H's Stuart Callahan, III hit a solo home run for the Wasps to trim the deficit to 3-1.
In the top of the fourth, Smith hit a one-out single and moved to third on Dockery's double. Goins would drive in Smith from third base with a sacrifice fly as TU extended its lead to 4-1.
But in the fifth inning with two outs, Jaret Hoppes hit a double and Park followed with a RBI single as the lead was cut to 4-2. Will Webb took over on the mound for starter Brice Anders. James hit a single and Fields followed with a two-run double to tie the game at 4-4.
In the top of the sixth, Absher led off with a pinch-hit single and later moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. He would scored on Smith's RBI hit as TU led 5-4. Later in the inning, Smith would cross the plate on Ortega's RBI single as the Pioneers were up 6-4.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Wasps got two aboard with one out. But Webb got a double play to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Absher got his second hit of the game, a solo homer to right field as the Pioneers led 7-4.
In the bottom the seventh, Park drew a lead-off walk as reliever Luke Maicon took over. A walk to Drew Park was followed by a strikeout. But Fields would single to drive in a run and put runners on the corners with one out.
Tusculum closer Cooper Emery took over on the mound as Gregorie hit a sacrifice fly to score Park and make it a 7-6 contest. But Emery got Callahan to line out to third base to end the game and secure his second save of the year.
Webb picked up his second win of the week as he went 1.1 innings, allowed three hits, two runs, two walks and one strikeout. Emery went 0.2 innings in the save.
