GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Newberry pitchers Jacob Clark and Jake McGlynn combined on a five-hit shutout to lead the Wolves to a 7-0 South Atlantic Conference baseball victory over Tusculum Friday night at Eastman Credit Union Field & Pioneer Park.
Clark (4-3) went seven innings as he scattered four hits, three walks and posted six strikeouts in his 105-pitch performance. McGlynn tossed two innings where he allowed one hit and accounted for a pair of strikeouts.
Newberry plated three runs in the second inning, one in the fifth and three runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach. The Wolves took advantage of nine hits and three Tusculum errors as four of Newberry's seven runs were unearned.
In the top of the second frame, Finn McLaughlin reach on a two-base error in the outfield. After a fly out, Logan Busenlehner singled up the middle to drive in the game's first run. TU starter Aidan Sproles fanned Bryson Nuckols before hitting Chandler Mims with a pitch. Both Busenlehner and Mims scored on Jomar Lugo's double off the wall in left to make it a 3-0 Newberry lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Caden Rector led off with a single and Kolby Watson drew a walk. But after a strikeout, Clark got out of the inning with a double play.
Sproles got into a jam in the third inning as Cooper Raines led off with a single and moved to third on a Keillor Osbon double. After a strikeout, Nick Foster was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Sproles managed with a strikeout and a fly out end the inning with no damage.
In the fifth inning, Raines led off with a double and scored on Osbon's RBI single. Ayden Moore took over for Sproles and got out of the frame with a double play, followed by a strikeout as TU trailed 4-0.
Tusculum threatened in the sixth when Jake Smith led off with a single and moved to second on Landon Dockery's base hit to left. Evan Goins moved the runners over with a bunt, but Clark plowed through with a strikeout and a ground out to maintain the shutout.
Newberry added insurance runs in the ninth with Luke Compton coming up with a RBI double while Lugo's sacrifice squeeze bunt brought in another.
McClynn would retire the Pioneers in order in the bottom of the ninth with a pair of strikeouts to end the game.
Raines went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Osbon had a 2-for-5 performance.
Dockery accounted for a 3-for-4 effort while Watson reached base twice with a pair of walks.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend set with Saturday's 1 p.m. doubleheader.
