Pioneers drop SAC pair to Newberry

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Nick Riedel pitched a three-hit shutout in the opener, while Bryson Nuckols went 3-for-4 in the night-cap as Newberry swept a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader at Tusculum Saturday afternoon at Eastman Credit Union Field.

Riedel recorded five strikeouts and worked around three walks as the Wolves prevailed 12-0 in seven innings to win the first game. Newberry accounted for 13 hits in a 9-3 victory in the night-cap.

The Wolves (17-9, 12-3 SAC) complete the weekend sweep over the Pioneers (9-16, 4-11 SAC) as Newberry moves into a tie for second place in the league standings.

Game 1: Newberry 12, Tusculum 0

Riedel recorded his second shutout of the season as Newberry prevailed 12-0 in seven innings. The Wolves plated runs in each of the first four innings including three runs in the third and four more in the fourth.

Meanwhile, Riedel stymied the Pioneers as he faced the minimum three batters in four of the seven innings he worked. Tusculum didn't get a runner past second base for the entire game in Riedel's 115-pitch performance.

The Wolves finished with 14 hits including Nick Foster who went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Logan Busenlehner went 2-fo3 with three RBI.

Tusculum lone hits came from Alejandro Ponte, Jake Smith and Mason Johnson.

Game 2: Newberry 9, Tusculum 3

Newberry broke open a 6-3 contest with a 3-run sixth inning as the Wolves posted a 9-3 victory over Tusculum in Saturday's second game.

Jomar Lugo, Luke Compton and Keillor Osbon each had RBI singles in the fifth as Newberry has won five of its last six outings.

Relief pitcher Will Rissmiller (3-0) recorded the win as he went 3.2 innings, allowed two runs, seven hits, two walks and a strikeout. Josh Bandy blanked the Pioneers over the last 2.1 innings to record his first save of the year.

Tusculum jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Landon Dockery drew a walk, moved to second on an error and later scored on Alejandro Ponte's two-out single to left.

Newberry answered with a pair of runs in the second as Nick Foster hit a one-out double. Campbell McCurry drew a walk and Nuckols followed with a double to bring home Foster from third. With McCurry at third base, he came into score on Chandler Mims RBI ground out.

Tusculum loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second, but Rissmiller got out of the jam with a double play.

Newberry extended the lead to 3-1 with a run in the third inning and made it 5-1 with Lugo two-run single in the fourth frame. A run in the fifth pushed the lead out to 6-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Dockery led off with a walk and scored on Mason Johnson's RBI double off the wall in right field. Ponte followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Evan Cage stepped up and hit a two-out single to bring home Johnson. With runners at first and third with two outs, Bandy took over for Rissmiller as he recorded a three-pitch strikeout to end the inning.

Rissmiller would face the minimum of the final two innings to secure the save and finish off the weekend sweep.

Ponte and Jake Smith had two hits each for the Pioneers who ended the game with nine hits in the contest.

Tusculum will be on the road Wednesday for a rematch with Trevecca Nazarene in Nashville.
