Mars Hill wins series finale over Tusculum, 9-2

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Peyton Starkey went 4-for-6 with three RBI to lead the Mars Hill baseball team to a 9-2 South Atlantic Conference victory at Tusculum Saturday afternoon from Eastman Credit Union Field.

The Lions (19-18-1, 14-9-1 SAC) win the weekend finale to capture the weekend series, 2-1 over the Pioneers (12-25, 6-18 SAC).

Mars Hill posted 14 hits on the day, while the pitching trio of Collin Chappel, Reid Withers and Dustin Dunlap limited Tusculum to a pair of runs and seven hits on the day.

Starkey put the Lions on the board in the third inning thanks to his two-out, two-run triple down the right field line as MHU led 2-0.

In the fourth inning, Dawson Anderson made it a 3-0 game with his two-out infield single. Anderson added another RBI single in the sixth to up the lead to 4-0.

Tusculum got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Landon Dockery reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Lions blew the game open in the seventh when Alejandro Aguilar belted a three-run homer over the center field wall. Zachary Cimino later followed with pinch-hit, RBI single to make it an 8-1 contest.

Starkey recorded his fourth hit of the afternoon with his RBI single to cap the scoring for the Lions. Tusculum scratched a run in their final time at bat with Dockery coming up with a sacrifice fly to drive in pinch-hitter Kolby Watson who had a pinch-hit double.

Chappel pitched five shutout innings where he allowed two hits, four walks and a strikeout to move his record to 2-2. Tusculum starter Walker Pedante (2-5) pitched five innings, allowed four runs (2 earned), six hits, two walks and four strikeouts.

Tusculum's Ryan Ortega came off the bench to posted a pair of hits.

Tusculum will be on the road for the next five games beginning with Tuesday's rematch at Lee University. TU defeated the Flames 12-9 in the season's first meeting.
