Baseball falls in mid-week game with Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. --- The Carson-Newman baseball team scored in every frame as the Eagles posted a 14-2 non-conference win over Tusculum in seven innings Tuesday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Complex.

Carson-Newman (24-17) erupted for six runs in the third inning and tacked on four more in the fourth as the Eagles won four of the five meetings against the Pioneers (15-27) this season.

C-N pounded out 15 hits on the day, led by three-hit performances from Aiden Gibson and Tanner Kilgore. Meanwhile, the Eagle bullpen blanked Tusculum for the final five innings.

Tusculum got on the board first when Ryan Ortega and Alejandro Ponte led off with singles but a double play limited the big inning. Kolby Watson would salvage a run with his two-out RBI single to bring home Ortega as TU led 1-0.

The Eagles answered with a run in the bottom of the first as Gibson doubled down the left field line and scored on Bradley Soto Diaz's RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.

TU's Evan Cage continued his hot hitting as he led off the second with a solo home run, continuing his string of three straight games with a round tripper.

C-N manufactured a run in the bottom of the second as Johno Pierce was hit by a pitch, stole second and third base and later scored on a ground out.

Eleven batters went to the plate for Carson-Newman in the third, scoring six times on seven hits including a two-run single to get the scoring started. The Eagles added four more in the next inning, highlighted by Pierce's two-run double to make it a 12-2 game to put the contest out of reach.

The Pioneers finished the game with nine hits including two hits by Ortega and a 2-for-3 performance from Caleb Mulcahy.

Tusculum returns to Eastman Credit Union Field this weekend to begin a four-game home-stand. The Pioneers will host 19th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne University for a three-game South Atlantic Conference beginning with Friday's 6 p.m. opener.
