GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Lincoln Memorial's Tre Mullins shot a tournament-record six-under par 65 to take the first round lead at the 2013 Tusculum College Fall Classic, which is being held at the par-71, 6,763-yard Link Hills Country Club.
LMU posted a tournament record team score of 272 (-11), six shots ahead of host Tusculum, who tied a school-record with its six-under par team tally of 278 on Monday.
Tennessee Wesleyan is third with 287, while Walters State is fourth at 289. Spartanburg Methodist is fifth with 291, followed by Milligan (293), Brevard (294), Catawba (295), Lincoln Memorial B (296), Mars Hill (298), Lenoir-Rhyne (300) and USC Lancaster (306).
Mullins posted a one-under par 34 on his opening nine holes and followed that with a sizzling five-under 31 on his inward nine to break the previous Classic record of 66, held by four others, including LMU teammate Rand Wasson. Wasson shot a 66 in last year's second round of the Fall Classic and posted another 66 today and is one-shot behind Mullins. Wasson opened with a four-under par 31 on his outward nine. Mullins' 65 is also tied for the sixth-best individual score by a South Atlantic Conference golfer.
Brevard's Sami Vanni and Evan Ball of Tennessee Wesleyan are tied for third place at 67. Tusculum's Warren Cheney was the top Pioneer on the afternoon as he carded a collegiate-best 68 and is tied for fifth place with Adam Lumley of Mars Hill.
Tusculum junior Leif Ratliff posted a collegiate personal-best of 69 and has sole possession of seventh place. Four players are tied for eighth place with rounds of 70, including TC junior Coleman Glick and Pioneer freshman Chris Hutson, who is competing as an individual competitor.
Seven players shot even par rounds of 71, including Tusculum senior Dakota Norton and defending Classic medalist Connor Froning of Lincoln Memorial. Tusculum sophomore Nick Forsberg fired a one-over par 72 and is tied for 20th place.
LMU's 272 is tied for the third-lowest 18-hole team score in South Atlantic Conference history, matching the tally posted at the 2007 LMU Fall Invitational, held at Woodlake Golf Club in Tazewell.
Tusculum's 278 matches the score the Pioneers fired in last year's final round of the TC Fall Classic, which is tied for the ninth-best in SAC history.
Tusculum sophomore Samuel Davis (76 - T45) and freshman Jake Mendenhall (82 - T62) rounded out the scoring for the Pioneers.
In conjunction with the women's tournament that is held simultaneously with the men's event, a combined championship is awarded to the school with the lowest aggregate combined score by its men and women's teams. Lincoln Memorial has a 20-shot lead for the combined championship as the LMU men and women posted a 582. Tusculum is second with 602, followed by Mars Hill (622), Catawba (627), Lenoir-Rhyne (635) and Spartanburg Methodist (683).
The final round of the eighth annual Tusculum Fall Classic begins at 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday.
