DADE CITY, Fla. --- Tusculum College senior and Nashville, Tenn. native Warren Cheney is blogging this week from Florida, where the Pioneer men's golf team is competing in the 2015 NCAA Division II Super Regional:
DAY 5: Wednesday, May 6, 2015
Today was the best day of the three for us as a
team. We shot seven-over as a team and Nick shot two-under! It is
disappointing that we did not qualify to move onto nationals but
having the chance is a huge step in the right direction for this
program. We have learned so much about our games and this
experience will only benefit everyone in the future. There is no
doubt in my mind that these guys will have another crack at it in
the years to come.
I know I speak for all of the seniors on this golf team when I say
that we are truly grateful to have this opportunity to play college
golf. I think when everyone becomes part of a team, their goal is
to leave the team better than it was in the past. Well I believe
that as a group of seniors we have accomplished this goal. We
started off as individuals and became a team. We set numerous
school records, won numerous tournaments and won the first South
Atlantic Conference Championship in school history.
Personally, I wouldn't trade my experience these past four years
for anything. It has truly been a blessing to represent Tusculum
College, be coached by a Hall of Fame member, Coach Dibble, and to
make some great friends along the way.
Thank you to everyone that has supported us this year, years in the
past, and who will continue to support this great team in the years
to come. We are truly grateful.
It's not goodbye; it's see you later.
DAY 4: Tuesday, May 5, 2015
Today was a step in the right direction. As a
whole, we improved by 12 shots and everyone seemed to be happier
with their performance. Going into tomorrow, I believe we all have
adapted the mentality of "go big or go home." In order for us to be
able to accomplish our goal, we are going to need another record
day from this team. We are more than capable of doing it and I
believe that we are all on the cusp of playing some really good
golf.
Our first tee time tomorrow is 8:20 a.m. off of hole No. 10. This
tee shot is much easier and it will hopefully allow us to get off
to the start that we need.
Overall this experience has been one of the best experiences of our
lives. We have been blessed with the opportunity to see how our
games stack up against the best teams in the nation, and for that,
we all are grateful. We will be able to take confidence from the
fact that even in hard conditions, we have been able to stick it
out and contend with these incredibly talented teams.
DAY 3: Monday, May 4, 2015
Today, was not the day that we all had hoped for.
We woke up ready to play and anxious to get to the course. After a
good breakfast, we started our drive to the course. We arrived to
the course about an hour and half before our first tee time. The
range wasn't packed like yesterday and the greens were as quick as
ever.
Overall, the team didn't play as well as we should have but the conditions dictated that. The morning groups were able to score, while the afternoon groups were hanging on for dear life.
Tomorrow, we are in the morning wave and we will be able to play this great golf course in favorable conditions. I know we are all looking forward to some revenge. Not to just show everyone here how we can play but also prove it to ourselves.
"Adversity causes some men to break; others to break records." This quote sums up this team. We are facing adversity now but we are a strong team and there is no doubt in my mind that we will come back rejuvenated and ready to play.
DAY 2: Sunday, May 3, 2015
We arrived at the golf course today at 10:30ish
for our 1:00 o'clock practice round after eating breakfast in our
hotel. We were all very excited and anxious to see the golf course,
hit balls, and putt on Lake Jovita's state of the art facilities.
We were not allowed on these facilities until 11:00. Finally 11:00
rolled around and we are hitting balls and putting next to some of
the greatest NCAA II players in the nation. One o'clock finally
came and we were sent out to our respective holes to begin our
practice round. We started on hole No. 17 and we all hit great tee
shots and started playing. The feeling was surreal.
We were finally playing golf on a NCAA Regional golf course.
As the practice round went on, we began to realize that off the tee
the golf course is fairly generous but once we got on the green or
around the green, things got more and more difficult. Things would
be much easier if we were able to hole out from the fairway, just
like Chris Hutson did today on hole No. 8 today from 125 yards out.
He sure did make that hole look easy.
After the round, we ate dinner at a very nice grill before
tomorrow's round. Tonight, we are all going to be looking at our
yardage books making sure that we have our game-plan ready. We are
ready and excited to play in this great tournament. 12:50 pm Monday
cannot come soon enough.
DAY 1: Saturday, May 2, 2015
"Well after a car ride that seemed like it lasted
an eternity, we finally arrived at our hotel just outside of Dade
City, Fla. We are all very excited and looking forward to playing
a very beautiful and difficult golf course.
We arrived at our hotel at 3 p.m. and since we had enough time, we went to a local driving range. This range looked like it was straight from the movie "Tin Cup". There was no grass, a car out in the middle of the range, and local Floridians hitting beside us. To me, it was a reality check. Growing up, that range was similar to one I hit on as a kid when I started playing the game. It made me realize how blessed and fortunate we are to be playing golf, but also competing for the regional title and representing Tusculum College."
