DADE CITY, Fla. --- The Tusculum College men's golf team shaved a dozen shots off its opening day score as the Pioneers posted 302 in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional. The 20-team, 54-hole tournament is being held at the 7,098-yard, par-72 Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club.
Tusculum's two-day total of 614 has the Pioneers in 17th place overall and eighth in the Southeast Region, up one spot from Monday's first round.
The final 18 holes will be played on Wednesday with the top three teams from each region advancing to the NCAA Division II National Championship in Conover, North Carolina later this month.
Senior Warren Cheney carded the best round of the day for the Black & Orange with a one-over par 73. The Nashville, Tennessee native shot 38 on his opening nine holes, but accounted for three birdies on his inward nine, including a pair in two of his last four holes to shoot 35. His two-day score of 77-73=150 has him tied for 44th place.
Junior Nick Forsberg made a five-shot improvement from Monday's round with a second-day score of 74 (+2). The Staples, Minnesota product finished with three birdies and five bogeys on his scorecard as he sits in 64th place at 79-74=153.
Knoxville, Tennessee junior Brad Hawkins is currently in 75th place with 75-80=155, including Tuesday's 80.
Sophomore Taylor Smith accounted for five birdies, including three on his outward nine to shoot a two-under par 34. The Gray, Tennessee native ran into some problems on his second nine holes as he recorded a double bogey on two of his first three holes on the inward. Smith rallied with a pair of birdies down the stretch to finish with 75, eight strokes better than Monday's 83. His two-round tally of 83-75=158 has him tied for 88th place.
Sophomore Chris Hutson trimmed five shots off of his first day score with three birdies as he posted an 80. The Knoxville, Tennessee product is 103rd with 85-80=165.
Lynn University extended its lead in the team competition following up Monday's 276 with 286 for 562 (-14). Nova Southeastern University is second with 570 (-6) while Barry University is third with 582. USC Aiken is fourth in the overall competition, but is the top-ranked team in the Southeast Region with 583. Host Saint Leo University is fifth with 584, while Florida Tech and Florida Southern College are tied for sixth at 592. Limestone College is eighth overall (2nd in the SE Region) with 593, while Georgia Southwestern University is ninth overall (3rd in the SE Region) at 594. The University of West Florida rounds out the top-10 with 596.
The University of North Alabaman is 11th with 598, while Erskine College and University of West Georgia are tied for 12th with 600. Columbus State University and Wingate University each have 601 and are tied for 14th place. Flager College (602) is 16th, followed by Tusculum, North Greenville University (620), Georgia College (629) and Benedict College (725) to round out the field.
