Tusculum shoots final round 295 at NCAA Super Regional

DADE CITY, Fla. --- The Tusculum College men's golf team fired a final round 295 to post a three-day total of 911 to finish 17th at the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional. The 20-team, 54-hole tournament was haled at the par-72, 7,098-yard Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club.

The 295 was the lowest score of the tournament for the Pioneers, led by junior Nick Forsberg, who carded a two-under 70. Forsberg, the 2015 SAC Scholar Athlete of the Year, tied for 33rd place individually with his three-round total of 223.

Nova Southeastern captured the Super Region title as the Sharks finished with 845 (-19), including Wednesday's final round 275. Lynn University finished runner-up with 855, while Barry University carded 875. NSU, Lynn and Barry will represent the South Region at the NCAA II National Championship in Conover, North Carolina later this month.

The three teams representing the Southeast Region are USC Aiken, who finished fourth overall with 876. Joining the Pacers is Georgia Southwestern who posted 888 and finished ninth. Limestone rounds out the Southeast Region representatives as the Saints finished the 892 and finished 10th overall and third in the region.

Tusculum made a strong charge up the leaderboard in the morning session as the Pioneers pulled to within two shots of 15th place in TC's first NCAA postseason appearance.

Forsberg showed considerable improvement in every round. After shooting a first-round 79, he shot a 74 in the second round before breaking par in round three (79-74-70=223). Forsberg carded five birdies on Wednesday and finished both the front and back nine at one-under par.

Senior Warren Cheney carded a five-over 77 in the final round of his collegiate career to finish in a tie for 51st place at 227 (77-73-77).

Junior Brad Hawkins rebounded from Tuesday's second round by improving his score seven strokes on Wednesday as he posted 73. Hawkins finished in a tie for 57th with a three-day tally of 75-80-73=228.

Sophomore Taylor Smith carded a final-round 75 (+5) to earn 81st place with a tournament scorecard of 83-75-75=233. Sophomore Chris Hutson carded a 91 to finish in 104th place with 85-80-91=256.
