Jonathan Onyeaka scored the game-winning goal on a header early
in the second overtime period as Queens University of Charlotte
downed Tusculum College 3-2 in a South Atlantic Conference men's
soccer match Saturday night.
The Royals (3-1-0, 1-0-0 SAC) won in their first match as a member
of the SAC by erasing a 2-1 deficit on a goal by Gersi Cilingiri
with 2:11 left in the second half, after the Pioneers (1-1-0, 0-1-0
SAC) had held the lead since the 16-minute mark of the first
half.
Jonathan Spicher had a goal and an assist for the Pioneers while
Tyler Linkous also scored for Tusculum, which yielded a goal to
Erick Suarez just 1:16 into the match before scoring twice in a 5
1/2-minute span to take the lead.
Spicher scored at 10:35 off an assist from Roberto Pimentel to tie
the match at 1-1, and then assisted as Linkous lobbed a shot over
Royals keeper Montrell Morgan at 16:02 for a 2-1 Pioneer lead.
Queens put pressure on the Tusculum goal throughout the second
half, finally converting with just over two minutes left on a free
kick as Cilingiri scored off assists from Austin Huddy and Thiago
Andrade.
Tusculum did not register a shot in overtime, as Queens had all
three attempts in the first extra period and the only one of the
second, which Onyeaka headed home just 1:26 in for his second goal
of the season and the Royals victory.
Queens finished the match with a 17-10 advantage in shots over
Tusculum, while both teams were equal in corner kicks at 5-5. The
Pioneers committed 19 fouls to 17 by Queens in the contest,
including four of the five in overtime.
Ashley Elsey finished with three saves in goal for the Pioneers,
while Morgan equaled him in the Royals' net with three stops of his
own.
Tusculum will be back in action Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Mars
Hill in a SAC match.
