Jonathan Spicher scored in the 60th minute as Tusculum College
closed its 2013 season with a 1-0 victory at Newberry College in a
South Atlantic Conference men's soccer match Saturday
afternoon.
Spicher's fifth goal of the season gave the Pioneers (6-10-0, 3-6-0
SAC) the victory over the Wolves (1-16-1, 1-9-1 SAC) in the final
game of the year for both teams. Tusculum finished the season with
a 5-3 record in eight road matches, including a 3-3 mark in SAC
road contests.
Tusculum finished the match with a 20-9 advantage in shots over
Newberry, including 11-3 in the second half. Newberry keeper
Patrick Sweatt finished with seven saves, while Pioneer keeper
Victor Ohlin did not make any saves on his way to his second
shutout of the season.
The Pioneers peppered four shots on goal in the first 24 minutes of
the match, but Sweatt made the save on each shot. Newberry nearly
took the lead in the 40th minute, but a shot from Mario Stojkoski
hit the crossbar and the rebound attempt by Nick Rembowski was
cleared by the defense.
Spicher connected at 59:20 as he took a feed from Roberto Pimentel
and deposited a shot to the near post from around the penalty area.
The Pioneers continued to direct shots at the Wolves goal over the
next 23 minutes, while the Wolves had a pair of attempts in the
final nine minutes but could not find the equalizer.
Both teams were whistled for 14 fouls in the match, while Newberry
was flagged six times for offsides to once by Tusculum.
Tusculum finished 4-9 in matches decided by one goal, including a
1-5 mark in overtime. The Pioneers trailed by more than one goal in
a match for a total of 35 minutes, 36 seconds the entire season,
all in a 3-1 loss at Catawba on Oct. 12.
