JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. --- Tusculum College senior Mark Patterson scored the equalizing goal in the 76th minute as the Pioneers salvaged a 1-1 draw at arch-rival Carson-Newman University Wednesday night in South Atlantic Conference action at McCown Field.

Trailing 1-0 in the late stages of regulation, Jonathan Spicher flicked a pass from the right side of the box to Patterson, who one-timed a sensational blast to the top right corner of the net for his first goal of the season.

The Pioneers got a great chance in the 80th minute when Conor McKenna's shot clanged off the cross bar to keep the match deadlocked.

Tusculum dominated possession in the final moments of regulation and in both overtime periods where TC out-shot the Eagles by an 8-0 margin. TC out-shot the Eagles by a 20-11 in the match.

Carson-Newman (3-4-0, 2-1-0 SAC) got on the scoreboard first in the 12th minute when Marius Staalby scored his first goal of 2014. Lucas Siqueira sent in a crossing pass from the right side and found the head of Staalby, who flicked the shot over TC keeper Ashley Elsey for the first goal of the match.

Elsey finished the match with four saves for the Pioneers, while C-N keeper Kavi Luchowa recorded 10 saves on the evening, including three stops in overtime.

This was the 29th recorded meeting between TC and Carson-Newman as the Pioneers lead the series 14-11-4. It marked the eighth time in the series that the match required overtime.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday when they travel to Anderson University for a 3:30 p.m. South Atlantic Conference match.
