Tusculum College junior Lukas Winkelmann has been named the
South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week in men's tennis for
the week ending March 16, the conference office announced
Monday.
Winkelmann went 3-0 in both singles and doubles to help the
Pioneers to three victories in spring break action at Hilton Head
Island, S.C., by scores of 6-3 over Charleston (W.Va.) and 9-0 over
Shepherd and Edgewood.
At number-one singles, the Boblingen, Germany native defeated James
Gammell of Charleston in a tiebreaker, then beat Chris Pratt of
Shepherd and Austin Papenthien of Edgewood while losing one game
combined in the two matches. The victories improved Winkelmann's
singles record to 11-0 this season.
At number-one doubles, Winkelmann teamed up with his brother,
Jonas, for 8-3 wins over Charleston and Shepherd and an 8-2 victory
against Edgewood. The victories gave the Winkelmann brothers a 9-2
record this season.
Winkelmann, the 2013 SAC Player of the Year, has a career record of
40-7 in singles and 32-18 in doubles for the Pioneers, who carry an
8-3 overall record and a 1-1 conference mark into Tuesday's 2 p.m.
match with Mars Hill at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
