NEWBERRY, S.C. --- Tusculum College took the lead in doubles and never relinquished it as the Pioneers defeated Newberry College 5-4 in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis action Tuesday afternoon.
Playing their fourth match in as many days, the Pioneers (16-1, 7-1 SAC) won the first two doubles points, then won three of the first four singles matches to clinch the win over the Wolves (18-3, 7-2 SAC).
In doubles, Tim Stierle and Jonas Winkelmann earned the first point with an 8-3 win over Fernando Espana and Fernando Tous at flight one. Toby de Klerk and Eduardo Munoz teamed up to defeat Logan Adkins and Richard Zeh 8-3 at flight three for a 2-0 Tusculum lead, but the Wolves got a point at flight two to cut the margin to 2-1.
In singles, Winkelmann beat Jordan Monosky 6-2, 6-2 at flight three to extend the Tusculum lead to 3-1, then Stierle downed Espana 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 at flight one for a 4-1 Pioneer lead. The Wolves pulled within 4-2 with a victory at flight two, but Tashique Kader earned the clinching point with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at flight four over Jacob Svantesson.
Tusculum will return to action Friday afternoon at Lincoln Memorial, with start time scheduled for 2 p.m.
