Anderson defeats Pioneers 4-1 in league opener

ANDERSON, S.C. --- Anderson University claimed a 4-1 victory over Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis Thursday afternoon.

The Trojans (9-4, 2-2 SAC) won the doubles point and took three of the four completed singles matches from the Pioneers (2-4, 0-1 SAC).

Anderson went ahead 1-0 in doubles as Patrick Cronin teamed with Vicent Mico for a 6-2 win at flight three over Angelos Avgeris and Nathan Matsuguma, followed by a 6-4 win at flight one by Jackson Lucas and Wynn Shioi over Will Gee and Rens Verhaar.

In singles, the Trojans took a 2-0 lead as Mathis Collignon beat Verhaar 6-2, 6-2 at flight one, and the lead increased to 3-0 as Poojith Reddy downed Sarthak Sharma 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 at flight six. The Pioneers got on the board at flight five as Miles Ray beat Hampton Goldman 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 at flight five, but Shioi defeated Matsuguma 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at flight two to clinch the win for Anderson.

The Pioneers will be home on Saturday, March 8 against Newberry for a SAC match beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Wolves (3-5, 2-1 SAC) beat Mars Hill 4-1 on Thursday.
