TUSKEGEE, Ala. --- Five singles wins boosted Tusculum University to a 6-1 victory over Tuskegee University in non-conference men's tennis action Friday afternoon.
The Pioneers (1-0) won the doubles point and took three of the five singles matches in straight sets from the Golden Tigers (0-1) to give head coach Wyatt Pauley the win in his first match at Tusculum.
In doubles, Angus Howard and Reese McCann teamed for a 6-1 win over Thompson Thomu and Kevin Wright at flight one, and Rens Verhaar partnered with Kai Poelchau to beat Miles Wilson and Tyler Ladge by a 6-3 score.
In singles play, Verhaar beat Quinten Tapera in a tiebreaker 6-3, 2-6, (10-4) at flight two, while David Negzaoui also won in a tiebreaker with a 3-6, 6-4, (10-8) win over Wright at flight three.
Straight-set wins went to Will Gee by a 6-0, 6-0 score over Wilson at flight four, Howard over Emmanuel Wettey 6-2, 6-3 at flight five and McCann over Ty'lon Miller 6-1, 7-5 at flight six.
The Pioneers will face West Virginia Wesleyan in a neutral-site match at Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday, Feb. 7 beginning at 4 p.m.
