HARROGATE, Tenn. --- Four three-set wins in singles by Tusculum University gave the Pioneers a 5-2 win over West Virginia Wesleyan College in men's tennis Saturday evening at Lincoln Memorial University.
Trailing 2-1 in the match, the Pioneers (2-0) swung the match in their favor as Reese McCann won a second-set tiebreaker to force a third set at flight six, and Rens Verhaar won in a third-set tiebreaker at flight two against the Bobcats (4-1).
Tusculum led after doubles as Angus Howard and McCann beat Felipe Mioch and Jheng Huang 6-2 at flight one, and David Negzaoui and Will Gee beat Hugo Poulain and Takuya Kobayashi 6-2 at flight three.
Mioch and Poulain earned straight-set wins in singles to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead, but Howard leveled the match with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win over Huang at flight five. At flight six, McCann lost the first set 4-6 but won the second set 7-6 (7-1) against Daniel Podoprygora, then swept the third set 6-0 for a 3-2 Tusculum lead.
Verhaar took on Stefan Audrins at flight two and split the first two sets 6-3, 4-6. In the third set, Verhaar and Audrins went to a tiebreaker at 6-6 but Verhaar swept 7-0 in the breaker to clinch the match. Gee closed out the win with a 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 win over Kobayashi at flight four.
The Pioneers return to the court on Tuesday, February 10 at Milligan, beginning at 3 p.m.
