HARROGATE, Tenn. --- Rens Verhaar won a third-set tiebreaker in the final singles match to give Tusculum University a thrilling 4-3 victory over Young Harris College in non-conference men's tennis Saturday morning at the Lincoln Memorial University indoor courts.
The Pioneers (4-0) led 1-0 after doubles and 2-1 in singles before the Mountain Lions (0-1) picked up back-to-back wins to take a 3-2 lead. However, David Negzaoui rallied for a three-set win to set up a winner-take-all finish between Verhaar and Samuel Guzon at flight two. Verhaar prevailed in the tiebreaker to take the 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) victory and keep the Pioneers undefeated in the early part of the schedule.
Tusculum went up 1-0 in doubles as Verhaar teamed with Kai Poelchau for a 6-1 win over Noah Pawirodirjo and Nills Vercruyssen at flight two, and Negzaoui and Will Gee came away with a 7-5 victory over Parker Rowan and Noah Torrelbauerbach at flight three.
In singles, Pawirodirjo beat Romain Payan 6-3, 6-3 at flight one to even the score at one point apiece, but Reese McCann put the Pioneers back on top 2-1 as he outlasted Vercruyssen 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at flight six. Young Harris went up 3-2 with two nearly identical victories, as Guillem Busquets Brau beat Angus Howard 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) at flight five and Greyson Williams defeated Gee 7-6, 7-6 (7-3) at flight four. Negzaoui would come from a set down to defeat Mason Harmon 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at flight three to level the match at three points apiece, setting up Verhaar's battle with Guzon for the win.
Tusculum has been forced to postpone its scheduled home match with West Virginia State on Sunday, Feb. 15 due to rain. The Pioneers will be on the road again on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at Shorter beginning at 1 p.m.
