Pioneers pull out 4-3 win at King

BRISTOL, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University men's tennis team held on for a 4-3 victory over King University in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

The Pioneers (6-1) won the doubles point and had a 3-0 lead in singles before the Tornado (3-5) picked up three straight victories to tie the match 3-3. However, Tusculum's Reese McCann claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win in the final match to clinch the victory.

Tusculum took doubles as David Negzaoui and Will Gee defeated Ben Jones and Bar Meshel 6-1 at flight three, and Rens Verhaar teamed with Kai Poelchau for a 6-4 win at flight two over Rohan Chalisgaonkar and Beckham Sylvester.

The Pioneers went ahead 3-0 as Poelchau beat Jones 6-2, 6-2 at flight six and Angus Howard earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Sylvester at flight four. However, King started its comeback as Lucas Machado won by retirement over Gee after two games and Meshel outlasted Negzaoui 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at flight two.

Danny Neleman leveled the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tusculum's Romain Payan at flight one, but McCann lost just one game at flight five against Maximillian Kellner to secure the win.

Tusculum is home for the first time this season on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. against West Virginia State. The Yellow Jackets are 3-1 this season, with a 4-3 victory over UVA Wise in their spring opener on Feb. 8.
