Pioneers rally to win 4-3 thriller over Anderson

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Will Gee and Angus Howard each rallied from a set down in singles to boost Tusculum University to a 4-3 win over Anderson University in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis Wednesday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The 23rd-ranked Pioneers (8-1, 1-0 SAC) trailed 3-2 with two matches remaining, but Gee and Howard each came from behind in their respective contests to knock off the Trojans (1-3, 0-3 SAC).

Tusculum took the doubles point by winning the last two matches after Anderson's Spencer Dorosheff and Alex Lozano opened with a 6-2 win over Gee and David Negzaoui at flight three. Howard and Reese McCann beat Mathis Collignon and Wynn Shioi 6-2 at flight one, and Rens Verhaar teamed with Kai Poelchau for a 7-6 (7-4) tiebreaker win at flight two over Mico Vincent Fenollar and Sky Thavornchaisophon to put the Pioneers on top 1-0 and improve their season record to 6-0 as a duo.

Anderson went up 2-1 in the match as Collignon beat Romain Payan 6-1, 6-0 at flight one and Negzaoui retired due to injury while trailing Shioi 2-6, 3-4 at flight three. Tusculum tied the match at 2-2 as McCann beat Stanley Long 6-1, 6-4 at flight four, but Fenollar beat Verhaar 6-2, 6-4 to put the Trojans back on top 3-2.

Gee dropped the first set to Thavornchaisophon 6-3 at flight four, but came back to win the final two sets 6-1, 6-2 to knot up the match at three points apiece. Howard fell behind Dorosheff in the first set of their match at flight five, but came back to claim the 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win and improve his season record to 8-2 with four straight victories.

Tusculum travels to Newberry to take on the Wolves on Saturday, March 7 beginning at 11 a.m. at the Oakland Tennis Center.
