23rd-ranked Pioneers beat Newberry 4-1 for fifth straight win

NEWBERRY, S.C. --- Tusculum University stretched its winning streak to five matches in a row with a 4-1 victory at Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis at the Oakland Tennis Center on Saturday.

The 23rd-ranked Pioneers (9-1, 2-0 SAC) won the doubles point and took three of the four completed singles matches against the Wolves (2-7, 2-1 SAC).

In doubles, Angus Howard and Reese McCann defeated Daniel Watson and Lucas Mruk 6-4 at flight one, and Rens Verhaar and Kai Poelchau remained undefeated at 7-0 with a 6-3 victory over Martin Posada Garcia and Noel Bartz at flight two.

Tusculum went up 2-0 in singles as Verhaar beat Posada 6-1, 6-1 at flight two, and the Pioneers took a 3-0 lead as McCann beat Mruk 6-4, 6-3 at flight six. Newberry got on the board at flight one as Watson beat Romain Payan 6-1, 6-4, but Howard delivered the clincher for the second straight match as he rallied for a 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Bartz at flight five.

The Pioneers' scheduled home match against Lees-McRae for Sunday, March 8 has been postponed due to the forecast of overnight rain, meaning the Pioneers will return to action in SAC play on Wednesday, March 11 at Lincoln Memorial beginning at 11 a.m. The Railsplitters are ranked 19th in Division II this week and moved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the SAC with a 4-0 win over Coker on Saturday.
