25th-ranked Pioneers come back for 4-3 win over 49th-ranked Purdue Northwest

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University came from behind to earn a 4-3 victory over Purdue University Northwest in non-conference men's tennis Thursday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The 25th-ranked Pioneers (11-2) were down 3-2 in the match to the 49th-ranked Pride (7-6), but earned straight-set wins from Will Gee and Reese McCann in the final two singles matches to take the victory and improve to 8-1 in non-conference play.

In doubles, the Pioneers took the point as Angus Howard and McCann defeated Samuel Dickson and Dani Chicano Melero 6-3 at flight one, and David Negzaoui teamed with Gee for a 6-4 win over Raphael Valente and Daniel Sroka at flight three.

The Pioneers went up 2-0 in the match as Howard beat Pedro Diaz 6-3, 6-1 at flight five, but PNW got on the board at flight three as Joao Martins defeated Negzaoui 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. The Pride tied the match at 2-2 as Dickson beat Rens Verhaar 6-4, 6-4 at flight one, and went up 3-2 when Chicano downed Romain Payan 6-3, 6-1 at flight two.

However, Gee leveled the contest at 3-3 as he beat Valente 6-3, 6-4 at flight four, and McCann came through with the clincher at flight six as he beat Sroka 6-4, 6-4.

The Pioneers are back in South Atlantic Conference play on Tuesday, March 24 at UVA Wise beginning at 11 a.m. The Cavaliers beat Mars Hill 4-0 on Thursday to go to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in SAC play.
