Pioneers lock up 6-1 victory over Salem

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University defeated Salem University 6-1 in non-conference men's tennis Monday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The 27th-ranked Pioneers (14-2) won their fifth straight match by taking the doubles point and five of the six singles matches from the Tigers (0-3).

In doubles, Angus Howard and Reese McCann defeated Simon Braeuning and Jose Cobo 6-3 at flight one, Rens Verhaar teamed with Kai Poelchau for a 6-2 victory at flight two over Elias Hort and Tomas Acuna, and Will Gee partnered with David Negzaoui for a 6-1 win over Jack Tagger and Benjamin Lantu.

In singles play, Sarthak Sharma was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Mahavir Modi at flight five, followed by Romain Payan defeating Braeuning 6-2, 6-3 at flight one. Gee clinched the win for the Pioneers as he defeated Stefan Schultz 6-2, 6-3 at flight three, followed by Verhaar taking a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hort at flight two. Poelchau won 6-0, 6-3 at flight four over Mika Rodermond, and the Tigers salvaged a point at flight six as Thijmen Wessel defeated Mario Jimenez Martinez in a tiebreaker 4-6, 6-3, (10-6).

Following Monday's match, the Pioneers honored Gee, Verhaar, Jimenez and Sharma on Senior Day.

The Pioneers return to South Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday, April 1 at the Nichols Tennis Complex against Mars Hill, beginning at 11 a.m.
