22nd-ranked Wingate snaps win streak of 27th-ranked Pioneers

MONROE, N.C. --- 22nd-ranked Wingate University defeated 27th-ranked Tusculum University 4-0 in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis Saturday morning at Monroe High School.

The Bulldogs (11-6, 8-1 SAC) won the doubles point in a tiebreaker and then earned straight-set wins in three singles matches to snap the seven-match winning streak of the Pioneers (16-3, 7-2 SAC).

In doubles, Will Gee and David Negzaoui took a 7-5 win at flight three over Jasham Joachim and Francesco Gatti, but Wingate came back with two victories as Martino Colabella and Riku Ogasawara defeated Rens Verhaar and Kai Poelchau 6-4 at flight two, and Carlo Rosellini and Rodrigo De la Torre downed Angus Howard and Reese McCann 7-6 (7-1) at flight one.

In singles play, Colabella defeated McCann 6-1, 6-1 at flight six and 53rd-ranked Ruben Lebron downed Verhaar 6-2, 6-1 at flight two. Joachim clinched the win for the Bulldogs with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Howard at flight six. Negzaoui was the lone Pioneer to win a set as he held a 6-3, 1-2 lead over De la Torre at flight three when the match ended.

The Pioneers will open the final week of the regular season with a visit to Emory & Henry on Tuesday, April 7 beginning at 11 a.m. The Wasps are 0-16 overall and 0-9 in conference play this season.
