GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Catawba College locked up the South Atlantic Conference men's tennis regular season championship with a 4-0 victory over Tusculum University on Saturday at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
The 12th-ranked Indians (15-1, 11-0 SAC) and the 27th-ranked Pioneers (17-4, 8-3 SAC) will both be in action Thursday, April 16 in the quarterfinal round of the SAC Championship Tournament. Tusculum is the fourth seed and will take on fifth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina, beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday.
In doubles, the Indians' Mateo Berne and Alessandro Valletta defeated David Negzaoui and Will Gee 6-2 at flight three, and the 47th-ranked team of Santiago Passoni and Alen Bill won in a tiebreaker over Rens Verhaar and Kai Poelchau 7-6 (7-1) to give Catawba a 1-0 lead in the match.
Berne defeated Negzaoui 6-3, 6-1 at flight three and 39th-ranked Agustin Mastri beat Romain Payan 6-2, 6-1 at flight one for a 3-0 Catawba lead, and Luca Bergonzi clinched the win for the Indians with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Gee at flight four.
Tusculum defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 4-2 at home on March 28 in the regular-season meeting between the teams. The SAC semifinals will be played Friday, April 17 with the championship match on Saturday, April 18.
