Pioneers upset in IVA quarterfinals

ST. LOUIS, Mo. --- The Tusculum men's volleyball team saw its record-breaking season come to an end with an upset bid in the Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (IVA) Championship quarterfinals to Missouri S&T.

The No. 3 seeded Pioneers (15-13) were stunned by the No. 6 seeded Miners (11-13) by scores of 25-19, 25-14, 18-25, 22-25, 5-15. The 15 wins by TU nearly doubled the previous best of nine.

Aaron Sallade landed 19 kills on a .444 hitting percentage for S&T, followed by 12 kills from Nate Meyer. Grant Edmonds dished out 34 assists and racked up a match-high three service aces. Bartosz Chmielewski scooped up 10 digs as the libero. Both Tyler Johnwick and Caleb Rohlwing were credited with five block assists.

Deklan Wingo reset the single-match kill record in his final collegiate appearance, landing 32 kills on a .421. Morgan Makovec (11), Joel Dubinsky (7), Aiden Roper (6), Caleb Hammann (2), and Kevin Blankenship (1) rounded out the scoring. The latter dished out 50 assists as he and Makovec each landed a pair of aces. Patrick Gresham scooped up 10 digs, while Taylor West notched eight in his final match. Hammann was credited with four block assists at the net.

Missouri S&T hit .300 as a team with 53 kills and 14 errors on 130 total attempts. Tusculum hit .277 with 59 kills, 21 errors, and 137 total attacks. The Miners led the match in service aces (8-7) and total blocks (11.5-5), while the Pioneers finished with more assists (55-51) and digs (46-43).
