Trailblazers take two from Pioneers

TIGERVILLE, S.C. --- The Tusculum University softball team dropped a doubleheader at North Greenville on Tuesday (Apr. 15).

Tusculum (34-14, 12-10 SAC) rounds out the conference regular season on Friday (Apr. 18) against Newberry with Senior Day festivities before the 1 p.m. first pitch.

Game 1: North Greenville 4, Tusculum 3
The Trailblazers scored four unanswered runs, including a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh, to overtake the Pioneers. Ellie Alvarez (3), Brooke Smith (2), and Ella Majchrzak (2) all had a multi-hit game.

The Pioneers got out to a 3-0 lead behind a Sammy Jimenez blast in the third. Smith and Alvarez went back-to-back infield singles before Jimenez belted the 25th home run of her career.

NGU got a run back on a solo shot with two outs in the fourth.

A two-run homer with two outs in the fifth tied the ballgame.

Tusculum had two runners thrown out at the plate on fielder's choice plays, including once in the top of the seventh.

North Greenville led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and stolen base. The Trailblazers drove in the runner from second with one out in the frame to walk-off TU.

Megan Ackerman (18-7) pitched all 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Game 2: North Greenville 11, Tusculum 1 (5 innings)
TU mustered three hits to NGU's 12 in the run-rule loss. Alvarez, Addison Hoffner, and Caylen Conrad tallied the hits as Majchrzak and Conrad drew the walks.

Conrad doubled to lead off the third inning and advanced on a Smith groundout. She scored on Alvarez's single to right.

NGU scored in all four innings at the plate, including a high of six runs in the second frame. The Trailblazers scored two of their runs via a wild pitch.

Natalie Spaitis (6-3), Nyah Vogel, and Dani Beckham pitched in the contest, relenting 11 runs on 12 hits and four walks. Spaitis recorded the lone strikeout for the staff.
