Guervil, Nelson to compete at NCAA Division II Championship

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University will send two runners to compete at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championship, which will be held March 11-12 at the Plaster Center on the campus of Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Senior Widchard Guervil and junior Zackary Nelson were among 270 men's qualifiers for the championship. Guervil will compete in the men's 60 meters and men's 200 meters, while Nelson will run in the men's 400 meters at the NCAA Championship.

Guervil is seeded third in both the 60 meters and 200 meters after winning gold in both events at the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship. Guervil posted his season-best time of 6.69 seconds in the 60 meters at the USC Open on Feb. 18, and ran 21.13 seconds in the 200 twice. first at the VMI Classic on Feb. 12 and again at the USC Open.

Guervil will be competing at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship for the second time in his career. As a freshman in 2018, Guervil finished fourth in the 60 meters and earned All-America honors. Guervil qualified for nationals in the 60 meters in 2019 but withdrew due to injury, and in 2020 he qualified in the 60 meters and 200 meters but the meet was canceled due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nelson is seeded 14th in the field of 18 entries in the 400 meters, after running a converted time of 47.73 seconds at the SAC Championship. Nelson took gold in the 400 at the SAC Championship and ran with Guervil in the winning 4x400-meter relay at the conference meet.

Nelson has competed at nationals before, running in the distance medley relay for Indian Hills CC at the 2021 NJCAA Indoor National Championship which finished in sixth place.

Preliminaries in all three events will be held on Friday, March 11 starting with the 60 meters at 4 p.m. and followed by the 400 meters at 5 p.m. and the 200 meters at 6:15 p.m. (all times Eastern). The top finishers will advance to finals on Saturday, starting with the 60 meters at 6:20 p.m., followed by the 400 meters at 7 p.m. and the 200 meters at 7:45 p.m. (all times Eastern).
