Several Pioneers receive USTFCCCA All-Region honors

NEW ORLEANS, La. --- Several members of the Tusculum University men's and women's outdoor track and field team have been recognized as All-Southeast Region honorees by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Earning men's All-Region honors were junior Jarvis Barber Jr. in the 100 meters, junior Zackary Nelson in the 400 meters, senior David Saruni in the 400-meter hurdles, and the 4x400-meter relay team of Barber, Nelson, junior Marquel Pittman and freshman Stephen Brewer. Women's All-Region honors went to senior Shanee Angol, who was recognized as the Top Regional Performer in the javelin by the USTFCCCA.

Barber was tied for third in the region in the 100 meters, running a best time of 10.39 seconds at the Catamount Classic on April 16. The Ocala, Florida native's time in the 100 was the third-fastest in program history and put him second on the program performance list in the event.

Nelson had the fifth-best time in the Southeast Region in the 400 meters with a school-record mark of 47.14 seconds at the South Atlantic Conference Championship on May 6. The St. Johns, Florida native, who won the 400 at the SAC Indoor Championship, qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championship in the event but was unable to compete due to injury.

Saruni was second in the region in the 400 hurdles, after setting a school record and finishing second in the SAC Championship with a time of 53.25 seconds. The Narok, Kenya native posted six of the 10 fastest times in the 400 hurdles in program history during the season and had four top-five finishes in five meets.

Tusculum's 4x400-meter relay of Barber, Pittman (Tallahassee, Fla.), Brewer (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Nelson set the program record and finished third at the SAC Championship with a time of 3:14.20, breaking the record set by the same quartet at the Catamount Classic of 3:14.36. The Pioneers had the five fastest 4x400 relays in school history during the 2022 season.

Angol was the Top Regional Performer in the women's javelin this season after ranking second in the region in the 2021 season. Her best throw of the season was 43.00 meters (141 feet, 1 inch) at the Catamount Classic on April 15, the second-best throw of her career. Angol, who hails from Grand Bay, Dominica, won gold at the SAC Championship with a mark of 131 feet, 10 inches (40.18 meters).

The South Atlantic Conference had 166 All-Region honorees, second only to the Northeast-10 among Division II conferences.

The top five individuals in each event from the region earned All-Region distinction from the USTFCCCA, in addition to each member of the region's top three relay teams.
