GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Several members of the Tusculum University track & field team have received All-Academic Athlete honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Juniors Jarvis Barber Jr. and Zackary Nelson were recognized for the Tusculum men, and senior Shanee Angol represented the Pioneer women. More than 400 men and 400 women were honored as USTFCCCA All-Academic Athletes in Division II during the 2021-22 season.
In addition, the Tusculum women's team received All-Academic Team recognition for having a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.0 or better. The Pioneers, whose cumulative team GPA is 3.18, are one of more than 100 Division II women's squads to receive the honor.
All-Academic Athletes must have a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade-point average, and achieved an NCAA qualifying mark either as an individual or as part of a relay during the indoor or outdoor seasons.
Barber, a criminal justice major, was tied for third in the region in the 100 meters, running a best time of 10.39 seconds at the Catamount Classic on April 16. The Ocala, Florida native's time in the 100 was the third-fastest in program history and put him second on the program performance list in the event.
Nelson, who is majoring in business administration, had the fifth-best time in the Southeast Region in the 400 meters with a school-record mark of 47.14 seconds at the South Atlantic Conference Championship on May 6. The St. Johns, Florida native, who won the 400 at the SAC Indoor Championship, qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championship in the event but was unable to compete due to injury.
Barber and Nelson were also members of the Pioneer 4x400-meter relay which set the program record and finished third at the SAC Championship with a time of 3:14.20, breaking the record set at the Catamount Classic of 3:14.36. The Pioneers had the five fastest 4x400 relays in school history during the 2022 season.
Angol, also a business administration major, was the Top Regional Performer in the women's javelin this season after ranking second in the region in the 2021 season. Her best throw of the season was 43.00 meters (141 feet, 1 inch) at the Catamount Classic on April 15, the second-best throw of her career. Angol, who hails from Grand Bay, Dominica, won gold at the SAC Championship with a mark of 131 feet, 10 inches (40.18 meters).
