MILL SPRING, N.C. --- The Tusculum University men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed at the Tryon College Banked Invitational on Friday at the Tryon International indoor facility.
Freshman Tomas Ribeiro broke the program record and won the men's mile run, while sophomore Kori Moore claimed the victory in the women's 200 meters for the Pioneers. Tusculum had a total of 12 top-10 performances during Friday's meet.
The Pioneers will travel to Lexington, Virginia to compete in the VMI Winter Classic on Saturday, Feb. 7.
MEN'S RECAP
Ribeiro was first out of 95 runners in the mile, running 4:15.45 to win by just over two seconds and break the school record of 4:16.99 set by Will Cronin at the VMI Winter Classic on Feb. 13, 2021. Junior Nathan Buckeridge took 10th place in 4:24.67, eighth-best time in program history.
Freshman Ivan Garcia Rubio took third in the finals of the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.23 seconds, after running 8.32 seconds in preliminaries and qualifying fifth. Garcia Rubio now has the six fastest times in program history in the 60 hurdles.
Junior Lansford Cunningham was fourth in the 200 meters with a career-best time of 21.84 seconds, and junior Chazz Alexander placed sixth in the 400 meters at 50.07 seconds. Freshman Lamarkus Dunn took 18th in the 400 meters and moved into sixth on the program performance list with a time of 50.06 seconds.
In the 300 meters, junior Marshae McDonald was the Pioneers' top finisher with a time of 36.77 seconds, which ranks sixth on the Tusculum performance list. Sophomore Levi Carson moved up to eighth on the 800 meters performance list with a time of 2:03.34, and freshman Casen Davis ran 2:48.82 in the 1000 meters which is ninth on the Tusculum performance list.
Senior Jaden Gary took sixth place in the shot put with a mark of 14.07 meters (46 feet, 2 inches).
WOMEN'S RECAP
A total of 133 runners competed across 26 sections of the 200 meters, and it was Moore that finished first with a time of 24.51 seconds, the second-best time in program history and 18th-best in Division II this season. Moore finished ninth in the 60 meters at 7.79 seconds.
Senior Jahzara Hart was second in both the preliminaries and finals in the 60 meters, running 7.44 seconds in the finals which is tied for the fifth-best time of her career. Sophomore Qitarah Castlin was fourth in prelims and third in finals at 7.53 seconds.
Senior Theresa Green-White took fourth in the 60 hurdles at 8.78 seconds, and senior Shanice Cox was third in the 300 meters at 40.16 seconds to just miss her program record of 40.01 seconds set last year at the VMI Invitational. In the 400 meters, junior Kialia Claiborne finished ninth at 58.87 seconds to move into sixth on the program performance list.
In the mile run, senior Jesica Mbhamali posted a career-best time of 5:33.70 to move into eighth on the program performance list.
