VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Tusculum University junior Lansford Cunningham earned All-America honors in the men's long jump on the opening day of the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championship on Friday.
Senior Jahzara Hart advanced to Saturday's finals in both the women's 60 meters and 200 meters. Hart will run in the 60 finals at 4:20 Saturday afternoon and the 200 finals at 5:55.
Cunningham is the first Tusculum field athlete, male or female, to earn Indoor All-America honors with his sixth-place finish on Friday.
Seeded third in the field of 18 competitors, Cunningham was outside the top nine qualifiers for finals until the last of his three preliminary jumps, when he posted a mark of 7.36 meters (24 feet, 1 3/4 inches) to move into seventh place.
Cunningham remained seventh after his first two jumps in the finals, then moved up one spot with his final leap of 7.32 meters (24 feet, 1/4 inch).
Hart was fourth overall in the 60 meters with a time of 7.37 seconds, and is seeded second in the 200 finals after posting a time of 23.59 seconds.
Sophomore Kori Moore, who was named South Atlantic Conference Track Athlete of the Meet for her performance at the recent conference championship, took 10th in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.50 seconds to earn second-team All-America recognition.
Also competing for the Pioneers were senior Shanice Cox, who was 13th in the 200 meters at 24.16 seconds, along with sophomore Qitarah Castlin who was 17th in the 60 meters at 7.57 seconds and 15th in the 200 meters at 24.22 seconds.
The Tusculum men are 20th after five of 17 events, while the women will look to get on the scoreboard on Saturday.
