Nequoiah Anderson scored a game-high 22 points and Kristen
McMillion grabbed a career-best 21 rebounds as Tusculum College
bounced back after losing a 13-point second-half lead to defeat
Lincoln Memorial University 61-57 in a South Atlantic Conference
Women's basketball game Monday night at Tex Turner Arena.
Anderson reached double figures for the eighth time in the last
nine games and eclipsed the 20-point mark for the fifth time in
that span, while McMillion became the first Pioneer in just over
four years to grab 20 rebounds in a game for Tusculum (6-16, 6-12
SAC), which overcame 31.3 percent shooting by limiting the
Railsplitters (12-10, 11-7 SAC) to 28.8 percent from the floor in
the game.
McMillion's 21 rebounds are the eighth-most in a game in program
history and represent the first 20-rebound performance since
Catherine Hintz had 20 boards against Catawba on Jan. 9, 2010. The
SAC rebounding leader also surpassed her previous career high of 17
rebounds set at Catawba on Dec. 14 and reached double figures for
the ninth time in 10 games and the 15th time in 22 games
overall.
Aisjah Roan led the Railsplitters with 19 points and seven rebounds
and Haley Nelson added 12 points, including a layup with 5:36 left
that tied the game at 48-48. Samantha Satterlee also reached double
figures for Lincoln Memorial with 10 points and eight rebounds,
while MaRanda Boddie had a team-best 10 rebounds for the
Railsplitters.
The Pioneers' Maelyn Cutshaw had a season-high nine rebounds to go
along with nine points, while Anderson matched her career high with
seven rebounds -- all on the offensive glass -- as Tusculum and
Lincoln Memorial deadlocked in the rebound battle at 50-50.
Tusculum grabbed the lead in the opening minute of the game and
extended it to as many as 13 points at 42-29 on a jumper by
Blakeley Burleson with 13:09 left. The Pioneers led 43-32 with
11:41 remaining, only to see the Railsplitters go on a 13-2 run to
cut the margin to 45-43 on a three-pointer by Nelson with 6:45
remaining.
A three-pointer by Kortnay Cox broke a 48-48 tie and gave LMU its
largest lead of the game at 51-48 with 5:14 remaining, but
back-to-back baskets from Shynese Whitener and Burleson restored a
one-point lead for Tusculum at 52-51 with 4:40 to go. The teams
traded the lead for the next three minutes until a free throw from
Anderson knotted the score at 55-55 with 1:50 to play.
After a pair of missed shots from the Railsplitters, Whitener gave
Tusculum the lead for good with a jumper with 51 seconds left at
57-55. A free throw from Anderson followed by two from McMillion
extended the Pioneer lead to 60-55 with 34 seconds to go, but Roan
answered with a layup to cut the margin back to three with 27
seconds remaining.
Looking for the possible tying shot, the Railsplitters turned the
ball over as Burleson took a charge with 17 seconds left, then hit
the clinching free throw with 7.9 seconds remaining to set the
final score.
Tusculum raced out to a 17-8 lead after 6 1/2 minutes following a
three-pointer from Anderson, and a 12-2 run was capped by a
Burleson layup with 3:12 left in the first half for a 31-19 Pioneer
advantage. Tusculum led 35-23 at the half behind 12 points from
Anderson and 11 rebounds by McMillion, while the Railsplitters shot
22.6 percent from the field as a team and were led by Roan's nine
points and seven boards.
Burleson joined Anderson in double figures for the Pioneers with 15
points and three steals in 38 minutes of action, while Whitener had
eight points and a pair of steals in just 30 minutes as she battled
foul trouble in the second half.
As a team, Tusculum shot 58.6 percent (17-for-29) at the foul line
with Anderson leading the way with a 10-for-15 effort. LMU finished
the game at 68.2 percent (15-for-22) at the stripe with Roan going
7-for-9 in the game. Both teams finished with 18 turnovers, with
Tusculum holding a slender 21-20 edge in points off turnovers.
The Pioneers will play their third game in five days when they host
Mars Hill on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Pioneer Arena. Tusculum rallied
from a 12-point deficit to defeat the Lions 85-78 in the teams'
first meeting on Jan. 30 at Mars Hill.
