GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Catawba College used a
12-1 run late in the second half to pull away from Tusculum College
and claim an 84-74 victory on Monday night in South Atlantic
Conference women's basketball action from Pioneer Arena. Senior
guard Brianna Mitchell scored a season-high 15 points for TC (2-6,
2-3 SAC).
Overall, four Pioneers scored in double figures, including 13
points from senior forward Rainey Story and 10 points each from
junior guard Shynese Whitener and sophomore guard Maelyn Cutshaw,
her sixth-straight double-figure scoring effort. Junior forward
Kristen McMillion had seven points to go with a team-high seven
rebounds while only playing in 15 minutes due to foul
trouble.
After the score was tied at halftime 46-46, neither team held
a lead of more than six points through the first ten minutes of the
second half. With the game knotted at 66-66 with 7:37 remaining,
Catawba (5-4, 2-3) held Tusculum without a field goal for the next
six minutes of action and used the 12-1 run to push its lead to
80-67 with 2:09 to play.
TC would add seven points in the final two minutes of the
game, but the Indians picked up the 10-point victory. Catawba held
a narrow 36-34 advantage in points in the paint, while the Pioneers
out-rebounded the Indians 36-35. Tusculum shot 41 percent from the
field on 25-of-61 shooting, while Mitchell was 6-of-11 from the
field, her highest shooting percentage of the season (54%).
The Indians led by as many as ten points in the first half
after Chloe Bully connected on a three-pointer to give Catawba a
35-25 lead with just under eight minutes to play before the break.
However, TC scored 12 of the game's next 14 points to knot the
score at 37-37 with 4:36 before halftime.
The Pioneers took their first lead of the game since the
five-minute mark on a free throw by Cutshaw that made the score
40-39 with just over three minutes until the break. TC held a
three-point lead with a minute to play in the first half, but a
three pointer by Catawba's Janna Dixon sent the game into the
locker rooms tied at 46-46.
Bri Johnson led Catawba with a game-high 23 points, while
Bully chipped in 17. Emma Ucinski and Zhaquondalee Greer finished
with 12 and 10 points respectively, while Greer added a game-high
nine rebounds.
Following a long break for the holidays, the Pioneers will
return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015 when it travels to
take on Newberry College. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
