CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- Sydney Wilson scored a
season-high 21 points and Tusculum College shot a season-best 55.8
percent from the field in a 74-55 victory over Queens University in
a South Atlantic Conference Women's basketball game Saturday
afternoon at the Levine Center.
Shynese Whitener added 19 points and six assists and Kasey
Johnson had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds as the
Pioneers (7-6, 5-5 SAC) never trailed on their way to snapping a
four-game losing streak.
McKell Oliverio led the Royals (2-12, 0-9 SAC) with 13 points
and six rebounds, but Queens shot 33.3 percent from the field in
the first half as Tusculum led 40-21 at intermission and by as many
as 23 points in the third quarter.
Wilson shot 9-for-13 from the field, including 2-for-4 on
three-pointers, to surpass her previous season high of 17 points
set Wednesday night against Mars Hill. It is the ninth time in 13
games this season that the freshman has scored in double figures.
Fellow freshman Johnson recorded her second double-double of the
season and scored in double figures for the fourth time in the last
five games. Over that stretch, she is averaging 11.8 points and 7.4
rebounds per game for the Pioneers.
Johnson and Wilson combined to score the first eight points of
the game for the Pioneers, while a basket by Whitener helped
Tusculum to a 12-2 lead with 2:47 left in the first period. The
Pioneers led by as many as 11 points in the quarter on their way to
a 17-9 lead, behind seven points from Wilson.
Back-to-back steals and layups by Wilson helped the Pioneers
extend their lead to 28-13 with 7:30 left in the first half, and
two more steals from Wilson in the final 90 seconds of the half led
to a pair of buckets, which gave Tusculum a 40-21 lead at
intermission.
As a team, Tusculum shot 57.7 percent (15-for-26) from the
field in the first half and 9-for-11 from the foul line. Wilson led
all players with 14 points in the first half while Whitener had 10
points. Queens shot 33.3 percent (9-for-27) from the field in the
half and committed 10 turnovers which Tusculum turned into 15
points.
The Pioneers took their largest lead of the game at 45-22 on a
three-pointer by Wilson with two minutes gone in the third quarter,
and Queens would get no closer than 15 points the rest of the game.
Tusculum led 55-37 at the end of three quarters as part of a 53.8
percent shooting performance (14-for-26) from the field in the
half.
Kristen McMillion finished with eight points and four rebounds
despite battling foul trouble and playing just 19 minutes. Morgan
Depew made her first career start and tallied seven points and five
assists in 26 minutes of action for the Pioneers, who also received
six points on 3-for-3 shooting off the bench from Kristen
Atwell.
Joining Oliverio in double figures for the Royals were Carmen
Richardson with 11 points and Sheridan Pressley had 10 points.
Karlesha Thompson scored four points for Queens, but had five
rebounds, six assists and a pair of steals in the game.
The Royals finished the game with a 32-30 edge in rebounds
over the Pioneers, but had just 18 points in the paint as a team
compared to 40 points for the Pioneers. Overall, Queens shot 37
percent (20-for-54) from the field and connected on just two of
their 14 attempts from three-point range.
Tusculum will be back in action on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at
Lincoln Memorial University for their first of two meetings this
season with the Railsplitters.
