Five hit double figures for Newberry in win over Pioneers

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Five players reached double figures for Newberry College in a 74-44 victory over Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Arena.

Rickell Brown finished with 20 points and seven rebounds and Jada Brown added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolves (13-12, 7-11 SAC), who shot 46.1 percent (35-for-76) from the field and held the Pioneers to just 25.4 percent (15-for-59) from the floor in the game. Newberry outrebounded Tusculum 50-37 and outscored the Pioneers in the paint by a 42-22 margin.

Josie Horner led the shorthanded Pioneers (2-22, 2-16 SAC) with 14 points and Angela Gomez added 12 points and a career-high six rebounds for Tusculum, but the Pioneers were just 2-for-18 on three-pointers and forced the Wolves into just eight turnovers for the game. Tusculum used just seven players due to injuries, with all seven players seeing at least 19 minutes of playing time in the game.

The Wolves never trailed in the game, leading 20-12 after one quarter and 37-25 at halftime. Newberry would extend its lead to as many as 33 points late in the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run, while Tusculum shot just 17.1 percent (6-for-35) from the field in the second half.

Horner shot 4-for-8 from the field and 6-for-7 at the foul line for her fifth double-figure scoring game of the season and second in a row. Gomez was 5-for-13 from the field and hit double figures in scoring for the eighth time this season, while breaking her career best of five rebounds set twice previously. Off the bench, Julia Szwichtenberg had five points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots in 20 minutes, with five points and four rebounds from Caroline McDowell. Aisha Patel made her first career start for the Pioneers and played 25 minutes, equaling her season high with seven rebounds.

For Newberry, Marykate Kent had 12 points and seven rebounds, while off the bench Leigha Harris and Ryann Hernandez had 10 points apiece. Newberry was just 3-for-7 from three-point range, with Kent going 2-for-3, and the Wolves were 1-for-2 at the foul line in the contest. Reghan Williams had six points and six assists for the Wolves, who had 19 offensive rebounds as a team and scored 15 points off 14 Tusculum turnovers.

The Pioneers will wrap up their three-game home stand on Wednesday, Feb. 18 when they host UVA Wise. The Cavaliers (13-11, 10-8 SAC), who defeated the Pioneers 74-64 at home on Jan. 14, fell into sole possession of sixth place in the SAC with their third straight loss on Saturday, a 78-68 home setback to 14th-ranked Coker.
