HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. --- The Tusculum College women's golf team finished 11th at the 2011 Newberry Invitational, held this week at the par 74, 5,808-yard Moss Creek Golf Course on Tuesday. Tusculum posted a two-day score of 713.
Tusculum sophomore Jillian Corum tied for 27th place with 90-83=173 and was the team's top finisher. Rookie Sara Howards tied for 35th place with 83-93=176, while senior Emily Palenkas posted 91-86=177 to finish 40th. Sophomore Haley Rye finished 53rd with 95-94=189, while junior Katie Doane placed 57th with 93-100=193.
UNC Pembroke won the team title with a 637, 11 shots better than tournament host Newberry (648). Barry finished third with 662, followed by Carson-Newman (684), Flagler (685), Armstrong Atlantic State (689), Queens University of Charlotte (691), Wingate (697), Catawba (699), Lincoln Memorial (700), Tusculum and Montevallo (734).
First round leader Katja Dammann maintained her lead and carded a 77-76=153 to claim medalist honors by five shots over Newberry's Barbara Castro (79-79=158).
The Pioneers return to action Mar. 21-22 as they compete at the Pinehurst Challenge in Pinehurst, N.C.
