JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. --- Tusculum College's
Jillian Corum won her opening match to advance to the round of 16
in the championship flight of the 2011 Tennessee State Women's Golf
Amateur, held this week at the Blackthorn Club.
Corum, a Knoxville, Tenn. native and a rising junior on the Pioneer
squad, defeated Maggie Scott of Charleston, Tenn., 4 and 3 to
advance in the championship bracket. Scott, the 1994 State Amateur
Champion, will now play in the consolation bracket.
Corum will face Samantha Gotcher of Clarksville in an 8:40 a.m. match on Wednesday. Gotcher advanced to the round of 16 with her 3 and 2 victory over Megan Beane.
The winner of the Corum/Gotcher match will play in Thursday's quarterfinal match against the victor between Kendall Martindale and Allie McKnight. Martindale won the State Amateur two years ago (2009).
Corum and Gotcher each shot 77 in Monday's stroke play competition to tie for sixth place. Martindale shot a two-under par 70 to capture medalist honors on Monday.
The quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be played on Thursday with the championship match slated for Friday.
Corum posted an 80.42 stroke average this past season for the Pioneers, which is the third best in school history and a new Tusculum mark for sophomores.
Corum captured two medalist titles this past season, winning at the Anderson Invitational and Maryville Invitational. The two wins ties a school single-season record, while her three career victories are a new TC mark. She finished seventh at the 2011 South Atlantic Conference Championship to earn a spot on the SAC All-Tournament Team.
Corum lowered her career scoring average to 81.79, which is presently the best in Pioneer history.
