TEMPE, Ariz. --- Several members of the Tusculum women's tennis team are including in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II Women's national and regional rankings, released last week.
Sophomore Katarina Majorova is ranked 12th nationally and senior Franziska Funke is ranked 47th in singles, while sophomore Annie McCullough is 27th in singles and ranked 20th in doubles with her sister, sophomore Caitlin McCullough.
Tusculum is also well-represented in the Southeast Region rankings, with four players ranked in singles. Majorova is ranked second, Annie McCullough is ranked fifth and Funke is ranked 11th, with Caitlin McCullough checking in at 15th. The McCulloughs are also ranked fourth in doubles in the region poll.
Majorova went 8-4 in singles during the fall for the Pioneers, with two of her losses coming to Division I opponents, and a third to the third-ranked player in the Division II poll. Majorova was the runner-up at the ITA Southeast Regional tournament after winning five matches in three days to reach the finals. The native of Martin, Slovakia was named South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year last year after compiling a 15-7 overall record, earning a regional ranking as high at 15th as a freshman.
Funke compiled a 10-2 record in singles play during the fall, capped by winning her flight championship at the Grizzly Open hosted by Georgia Gwinnett College. Her losses came to a Division I opponent and to a ranked Division II opponent, while her wins included two victories over NAIA ranked players at the Grizzly Open and a win over teammate McCullough in the same event. The native of Bochum, Germany is a two-time All-SAC first-team honoree in singles and a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America selection who has a career record of 56-11 in dual matches.
Annie McCullough finished the fall season with a 9-2 singles record, winning her flight at the Western Carolina Invitational with straight-set wins over three Division I opponents. McCullough also advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Southeast Regional tournament and was a quarterfinalist at the Grizzly Open before falling to Funke. The Belfast, Northern Ireland product has a career singles record of 21-4 for the Pioneers.
Caitlin McCullough posted a 6-3 record during the fall portion of the Pioneers' schedule, winning two matches at both the Western Carolina and ITA events. McCullough also had a 2-0 record in dual matches during the fall for the Pioneers.
As a team, the McCulloughs went 10-2 in the fall, winning the flight two doubles title at Western Carolina by defeating two Division I opponents. The duo also advanced to the ITA semifinals before being eliminated by a top-10 ranked team, and was knocked out by another ranked duo in the second round of the Grizzly Open. The McCulloughs rolled to three victories in dual matches during the fall, dropping a total of four games in their three wins.
The first Division II team rankings of the season will be released on January 17. The Pioneers (3-0) will open their spring season on Wednesday, Feb. 7 against Young Harris at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
