Young Harris grabs 5-2 indoor win over Pioneers

HARROGATE, Tenn. --- Young Harris College defeated Tusculum University 5-2 in non-conference women's tennis Saturday afternoon at the indoor courts on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University.

The Mountain Lions (1-0) dropped the doubles point to the Pioneers (1-2), but won five of the six singles matches to take the victory.

In doubles, Carla Guasch and Sophia Amyes defeated Tuva Asplund and Holly Ashford 6-2 at flight two, but Young Harris got a win at flight one to bring the doubles competition even. Tusculum would get the point as Ginevra Moreno Villa and Jimena Rivera Camacho downed Callie Stanfield and Lexie Gillespie by a 6-4 score.

The Mountain Lions won the first three completed singles matches to go ahead 3-1, but Guasch came up with a 6-4, 6-0 win at flight four over Gillespie to bring the Pioneers within 3-2. However, Young Harris would get a tiebreaker win at flight two and a straight-set victory at flight three to finish off the win.

Tusculum's scheduled home match against West Virginia State on Sunday, Feb. 15 has been postponed due to weather. Instead, the Pioneers will return to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at Shorter beginning at 1 p.m.
