Four in a row for Pioneers with 5-2 victory over WVSU

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University picked up its fourth win in a row on Saturday as the Pioneers defeated West Virginia State University 5-2 in non-conference women's tennis at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (5-2) won five of the six singles matches against the Yellow Jackets (0-5) after dropping the doubles point to open the match.

In doubles, Tusculum opened with the duo of Ginevra Moreno Villa and Jimena Rivera Camacho taking a 6-0 victory at flight three over Carlota Pamies Petit and Christina Karagrigoriou, but the Yellow Jackets won the final two flights to go up 1-0 in the match.

The Pioneers went out to a 3-1 lead as Rivera defeated Petit 6-2, 6-3 at flight five, Ylva Frafjord Landa downed Amanda Menendez Thomasson 6-2, 6-1 at flight one and Emma Kotzmannova beat Daniela Cruzado Fretel 6-0, 6-3 at flight two. West Virginia State cut the deficit to 3-2 as Maria Mercedes Kaltakian beat Moreno 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 at flight three, but Carla Guasch downed Talia Nichols 7-5, 0-6, 7-5 at flight four in the clincher and Sophia Amyes beat Karagrigoriou 6-0, 3-6, (10-3) in the final match of the day.

Tusculum will travel to Livingstone for a non-conference match on Sunday, March 1 starting at 1 p.m. The Blue Bears are 2-1 this season but will be playing their first match in more than two weeks.
